Replacing R22 dryers

What is R22 and why is it a problem?

R22 (chlorodifluoromethane) is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) once widely used in refrigerant dryers and air conditioning systems. It was prized for its cooling efficiency, helping dryers condense and remove moisture from compressed air.

But R22 comes with serious environmental drawbacks. With a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of 1,810, it’s a potent greenhouse gas and has therefore been phased out globally. In the UK and EU, it has been banned in new equipment since 2010 and banned within servicing since 2015.

Using R22 dryers can also be expensive as they incur higher servicing costs and parts are limited. Being less efficient than modern alternatives, they consume significantly more energy and have higher running costs.

If you have a Carbon Reduction Plan in place, using R22 equipment will have a huge impact on your environmental reporting and replacement should be a priority.

Today’s compressed air dryers offer better performance and a lower carbon footprint, but why are they needed within a compressed air system at all?

A dryer is a vital component of a compressed air system because it ensures the air delivered is clean, dry, and suitable for use in sensitive equipment and processes. When air is compressed, its temperature rises, and as it cools, moisture condenses from the air. This water vapor, if left untreated, can cause corrosion in pipelines, damage tools, contaminate products, and lead to costly downtime or repairs. A dryer removes this residual moisture, protecting the integrity of the system and improving overall efficiency.

A typical compressed air set-up includes:

Air compressor → compresses ambient air
Aftercooler → removes bulk moisture
Dryer → eliminates remaining water vapor
Filters → traps oil and particles
Receiver tank → stores clean, dry air

Choosing the right dryer

There are several factors to consider when selecting a dryer, whether it’s as a replacement or introducing it into an existing compressed air system. These include:

Extracting N₂ from the air you already use

A diverse range of applications companies rely on nitrogen gas to keep their processes clean, dry and precise. Traditionally, gas is purchased in bottles or cylinders that are delivered to site. But many companies are now choosing to produce their own N₂ from their existing compressed air system.

Nitrogen generators extract N₂ from a compressed air supply by removing oxygen and trace gasses from the air and concentrating nitrogen to a desired purity. Producing nitrogen gas in-house is a simple process with several significant benefits.

The benefits to your business

Cost reduction

Using your own supply of N₂ can cost up to 80% less than ordering bottled nitrogen and having it delivered. Typical payback time is just 18-24 months. Furthermore, in-house N² is not subject to supply and cost volatility.

Efficiency

The last 10-15% of the nitrogen in a bottle is essentially unusable, as it is not possible to withdraw it. Therefore, cylinders are returned with gas still within them, wasting both money and nitrogen. Producing N2 in-house also eliminates the cost and environmental impact of regular deliveries to site.

Safety

Reduces the risk of manual-handling accidents caused by moving heavy cylinders. Nitrogen produced by a generator is supplied at low pressure making it considerably safer than storing high-pressure N² cylinders. A leak from one of these bottles can cause serious injury and even asphyxiation.

Many of our clients purchase used equipment for this purpose. As long as it has been serviced by a professional, it should provide a crucial alternative source of compressed air until the main machine can be repaired.

With a range of new and second-hand compressors in stock, BCAS could have a cost-effective back-up machine ready to meet your needs .

However, this still leaves a process in a precarious position when the primary compressor is out of action and replacement parts are on order.

Shipping and logistics issues appear to be at all all-time high with delivery on many items, including standard service kits, now being as long as 14 weeks.

For processes that cannot function without compressed air, BCAS advises clients to store critical spares and ideally a service kit, to avoid delays caused by long lead times. This usually involves just a small number of items, but it can mean the difference between a rapid repair and a catastrophe.

IWD24 - Women in Engineering

International Women's Day 2024

We always celebrate International Women’s Day at BCAS. It’s often a symbolic gesture such as wearing purple, or eating cake (how we celebrate most things here to be honest). Sometimes it’s something more meaningful, such as an informal discussion in the office on the merits of IWD and the reasoning behind it.

This year however, we thought it would be interesting to look at how campaigns to champion women in the workplace and achieve real equality, have impacted on women who work within the engineering industry.

We asked our female colleagues three questions about the changes they’ve seen and the advice they’d give to young women about to embark on a career in this arena.

The responses were fairly consistent and overall, very positive, but they did imply that there is still room for further improvement in the industry as a whole. Here's what we found out:

Q. How have things changed for women working in engineering since you started your career?

All respondents said that they’d seen huge improvements for women: That there are significantly more women in engineering, but most of all, that there is more opportunity for career progression. The perception was that within our own particular arena (compressed air), women were previously restricted to administration or support roles, with no senior positions being held by women. Of course, this is no longer the case, and certainly not at BCAS where today women make up 50% of the leadership team.

Q. What would you say are the best changes you have seen?

Again, respondents said that in the past, they felt that it was perceived by others within the industry, both male and female, that women would not have the same level of engineering understanding and technical knowledge as a man. The consensus was that this has improved significantly and that they are now judged by their ability, without having to first overcome preconceptions and prejudice.

Q. What advice would you give to a young woman about to join the engineering industry?

What was interesting about the responses to this question, was that much of the advice was the same as you would give any young person: ‘Be yourself’, ‘Learn as much as you can’, and ‘Believe in yourself’. On the whole, it was seen that advice didn’t need to be gender-specific, implying that the obstacles that women used to have to navigate to pursue a career within engineering, were no longer of significance.

That said, some of the closing comments suggest that women are still expected to adapt to the ‘engineering environment’: ‘Grow a thick skin’ and ‘Keep a sense of humour’ were two such remarks, which hint of a culture that can still be challenging and adversary at times. Although, it’s fair to say that this is unlikely to be exclusive either to women or to engineering.

So, according to our small survey, there is much to celebrate this International Women’s Day, and certainly for us here at BCAS. Particularly for the cake lovers among us!

Three of our engineers recently attended a breakdown at a stonemason’s site, which as you can see, involved a considerable amount of dust.

Our customers work in a huge variety of settings and environments, some of which can be quite challenging. As specialists in compressed air, we’re able to identify potential causes of equipment failure and recommend steps that our customers can take to avoid them.

For example, in a dusty atmosphere like this, we might recommend additional filtration, frequent filter replacement, better ventilation or even moving compressor equipment outside of the workshop.

There is so much more that a compressed air specialist can do to ensure your air supply is reliable and that is your set-up is tailored to your specific needs. Servicing comes as standard but so should advice.

Most organisations are aware of their responsibility to provide a safe and comfortable working environment for their employees. But within industry, it can sometimes be challenging to balance these with the technical needs of an application and the commercial requirements of a business.

As Gast Jun-Air’s partner for the South of England, BCAS has access to a broad range of air compressors, pumps, blowers, and air motors that can meet these complex requirements.

For example, pumps are often used to drive equipment such as turntables, fibreglass choppers, hoists and winches and mixing equipment. But some of these environments are challenging, sometimes dirty, dusty, hot, and even potentially hazardous.

Air motors are non-electrical devices, so they provide spark-free operation, which means that compared with liquid ring pumps, the likelihood of flammable gas ignition is greatly reduced, and safety is enhanced. Which is probably why Gast air motors are used in such a wide variety of industries, including pharma, advanced manufacturing, and food and beverage.

A stitch in time...can save you money: Compressed Air Maintenance

When presented with a quotation to have your compressed air equipment serviced, it can be very easy to see that cost as unnecessary rather than essential. This is because you are not seeing how much it will cost you to not have it done and it’s worth knowing that there is the potential for it to be considerably more.

BCAS has laid out some of the key benefits of keeping on top of your air compressor maintenance schedule.

Energy efficiency

Dirt and grime build up on numerous key components of a compressor such as filters, coolers, vents, belts and bearings. This build-up will cause equipment to run sluggishly, at a higher temperature and consuming more power. With compressed air accounting for an average of 30% of a plant’s energy usage, the additional costs this will cause will be significant.

Employee safety

Servicing is an opportunity to identify and mitigate any Health & Safety risks caused by faulty machinery. In fact, for many applications and organisations, the frequency of servicing is a key element of their Health & Safety responsibilities. Visits by professional engineers also offer the chance for unsafe working practices to be highlighted and eradicated.

Improved reliability

Preventive maintenance makes it possible to detect problems at an early stage before they cause serious system damage and lead to costly and time-consuming repairs. Running a compressor with dirty filters, with too little oil and with faulty parts will cause unnecessary and additional wear on your machine. Regular servicing is therefore one of the very best ways to increase your asset’s life expectancy.

As we navigate our way through these challenging economic conditions, we are all looking for ways to reduce costs. This may include implementing measures to improve energy efficiency, shopping around for cheaper materials or cutting back on non-essential services. But postponing the planned maintenance of your compressed air equipment is a false economy and is likely to result in higher costs in one way or another.

Understanding Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR 2000 S.I.128)

At BCAS we are always looking at ways to support our compressed air customers in meeting their legal, environmental and health and safety obligations.

As members of the British Compressed Air Society, we have access to a range of training courses, which we can extend to our compressed air customers.

One of our customers recently took advantage of this facility, with several team members completing the Understanding Pressure Systems Safety Regulations ( PSSR 2000 S.I.128 ) online learning programme.

This blended learning workshop covers the Written Scheme of Examination in relation to compressed air systems. It provides knowledge of the Pressure Systems' Safety Regulations (S.I 2000 No 128), related standards and codes of practice.

The scope of PSSR 2000 covers a range of activities concerning compressed air equipment. All companies that fall under the criteria of the UK Regulations must have various parts of the pressure system inspected and certified, while owners and users must also document repairs and modifications to ensure safety.

New designs for any pressure system must be approved, then constructed and installed safely. Maintenance and training are key parts of PSSR 2000 to ensure systems are “Maintained so as to Prevent Danger” and that all parties involved in operating the systems understands any risks and emergency procedures.

The British Compressed Air Society course involves a self-study, e-learning module, followed by a virtual classroom session with a PSSR expert to cement learning, dispel myths and understand the most frequently asked questions.

The course is completed with an online examination and can be used towards the examiner qualification,

TM44 Air conditioning inspections

Did you know that if your property has an air conditioning system with a combined cooling capacity of over 12kW, then by law, you must have a TM44 inspection in place? These inspections must be carried out every 5 years by an accredited, independent air conditioning energy assessor and a copy of the report should always be kept on site.

The purpose of a TM44 inspection is to provide a comprehensive report on the efficiency of an air conditioning system and guidance on how this can be improved. Inspections are a legal requirement and there are financial penalties for non-compliance.

If you have an environmental and sustainability plan in place, not only is compliance essential, it also helps to demonstrate your commitment to minimising your organisation’s impact on the environment.

To complete a TM44 inspection, an accredited energy assessor will visually examine your AC system and its controls and produce a report which includes:

Generate your own in-house supply of nitrogen gas

After a series of nationwide CO2 shortages, many processes, including food and beverage production, are moving towards nitrogen as a reliable and cost-effective alternative.

By installing a nitrogen generator you can produce a reliable and secure source of N2 gas from your existing compressed air supply, protecting you from the supply and cost fluctuations of CO2 that can be so disruptive to your business.

A diverse range of manufacturing and engineering companies rely on nitrogen gas to keep their processes clean, dry and precise. For many years, the traditional way to obtain this useful gas was to order nitrogen bottles or cylinders that were delivered to your site.

However, using pressurised cylinders is typically the most expensive and inefficient method of using nitrogen gas. Today, many companies are making the switch to a more cost-effective, reliable choice: nitrogen generators.

The last 10-15% of the nitrogen in a bottle is essentially unusable, as it is not possible to withdraw it – meaning cylinders are returned with gas still within them, wasting both money and nitrogen. Producing nitrogen in-house also means fewer deliveries to site, which as well as being safer and faster, reduces your carbon footprint. In fact, producing gas at a nitrogen plant requires vast amounts of energy consumption – so generating it from your own compressed air system is considerably better for the environment.

Playing our part

BCAS has long been proactive in our approach towards our environmental responsibilities. However, we are now finding ourselves being asked on an incr easingly frequent basis, to articulate and demonstrate the measures we take to reduce our impact on the environment.

We thought therefore that all of our clients and suppliers might be interested to hear the contribution BCAS is making to the battle against climate change. We hope this communication will offer reassurance of our commitment but might also help others to add to their own efforts. We also invite input on what more we can do ourselves.

Firstly, current environmental regulations, laws and codes of practice are regarded as setting the minimum standards of environmental performance. While we are a small company and there is therefore a limit to the measures we can take, there is considerably more we can do than meet our legal requirements.

Culture

In particular, at BCAS, we view the role of company culture as being hugely significant in the effectiveness of an environmental and sustainability programme.

This is why we encourage all team members to have an input into the policy and its execution. We are not simply asking employees to comply, we are asking them to help shape the company’s approach, to drive it forward and to take credit for its success.

In order to set this mindset, we start the process at the point of induction and carry it on through as each employee develops into their role:

All BCAS staff are trained in our environmental management policy and given guidance on its implementation as new starters.
Measures have been implemented to help employees to use ‘green’ transport, for example, providing facilities for cyclists, encouraging car sharing and encouraging the use of public transport by providing information on local routes. These are communicated to team members prior to them joining the company and during the induction process.
In the office environment, paper is used sensibly, with measures to re-use and recycle wastepaper and the increased use of electronic communication to reduce the need for paper use
We have implemented a job management system that has allowed us to work more digitally and move away from paper-based solutions. This system also enables us to ensure the maximum fuel efficiency of our job allocation by location. These benefits are communicated to all employees during training, to enable them to use the system to its maximum capacity.
We run an internal initiative to reduce the amount of energy used within the business. This involves soliciting energy-reduction suggestions from the whole team and has led to significant changes and savings. For example: replacing existing lighting with LED bulbs and changing behaviour regarding the use of air conditioning, heating and lighting.

Other initiatives and practices that we have implemented include:

Packaging from goods received is re-used or recycled wherever possible. Wooden pallets are given to a local community group for repurposing.
We endeavour to reduce or eliminate the use of ozone depleting chemicals (CFC, Halon, 1.1.1 Trichloroethane, HCFC), tropical hardwood from forests which have not been independently certified as sustainable, pesticides on the UK. red list or the EU black list, and peat for soil amelioration purposes.
BCAS ensures that no polluting matter enters surface waters or groundwater. We operate an auditable, responsible programme for the safe disposal of oil and waste, and we hold a waste carrier’s licence issued by the Environment Agency.
Any services used for the storage or disposal of waste are checked to ensure that appropriate licences are held.
We aim to replace all of our engineering fleet with electric vehicles when improvements in range are consistent and cost-effective and as and when replacements are required.

Collaboration

However, we do appreciate that it is not enough to simply look at what we can do internally to reduce our environmental impact. We also work closely with clients and suppliers to identify and create opportunities for improvement.

Some of the measures we take to foster combined sustainability efforts include:

Where possible, we use suppliers who are willing to take away packaging for re-use or recycling and we consider the environmental impact of any purchases. We seek to use and buy the most energy-efficient products available to us, within reasonable budgetary restraints.
We endeavour to use sub-contractors and suppliers who comply with the requirements of our Environmental and Sustainability policy and help them to comply with environmental laws and regulations as much as possible.
We continuously communicate and promote a range of products, services and measures that our clients can use to reduce the energy consumption of their compressed air and vacuum systems. Energy efficiency is our priority message and is a theme that runs through our entire proposition.
We advise all clients of their obligation to comply with the Water Resources Act 1991 and encourage the use of oil/water separators where applicable.

Our local environment

In addition to our overall strategic approach, BCAS also undertakes a series of practical measures to help protect and sustain the environment of our local community:

When on site, our engineers check the area for endangered species, protected plant species, trees subject to a Tree Preservation Order, and protected archaeology. No work is commenced until it has been confirmed it is safe to do so without causing environmental damage.

BCAS has worked hard to become an approved EXOx supplier (Energy Solutions Oxfordshire) to advise local companies on energy-saving opportunities available to them.

BCAS makes a regular carbon offsetting donation to Make it Wild to support their tree planting and wildlife reserve construction initiatives.

And because every little helps, even the flower beds outside our offices have been planted with shrubs and flowers that support the local insect and bee population. Protecting and sustaining the environment really is at the heart of everything we do.

Avoid compressor breakdowns in hot weather

While our thermometers are reaching unprecedented heights in this country and we are all trying to keep cool, it's worth bearing in mind that the heat can cause problems with your compressed air equipment.

To help you to ensure that your compressed air supply remains constant and unaffected by the hot weather, BCAS reminds you to take the following steps:

Keep plant rooms well ventilated (important for your colleagues as well as your equipment!)
Check your oil - ensure it is at the required level and top up if necessary
Ensure filters are clean and not worn
Check dryer for internal and external blockages - clear with air if necessary

Have equipment serviced regularly - important to avoid any kind of breakdown but this is also an opportunity for you to ask our engineers about preventative measures you can take for your specific set-up

Oil/water separators

Efficient, cost-effective disposal of compressor condensate

Most responsible users of compressed air are already aware that the condensate produced by their machines is classified as hazardous industrial waste and therefore must be disposed of responsibly.

Having condensate disposed of by a licensed waste carrier can be expensive but discharging oily waste into the water system is illegal and carries substantial fines.

Installing an oil/water separator is a cost-effective alternative that allows you to comply with the Water Resources Act 1991 and to meet your other environmental responsibilities. This allows you to extract the oil from the condensate so that the water can just be poured away after being cleaned.

All compressed air systems have leaks. The average leakage rate is approximately 25% but some plants lose as much as 80% of their compressed air due to leaks. A single 3mm diameter leak can cost up to £600 a year.

While it may not be practical to eliminate all leaks, it is not difficult to greatly reduce and minimise them. The percentage lost to leakage should be less than 10% of your total compressed air production. A well-maintained system with a proactive leak detection programme in place should allow you to achieve this.

In addition to being a source of wasted energy, leaks can also contribute to other operating losses. By forcing the equipment to cycle more frequently, leaks shorten the life of almost all system equipment (including the compressor package itself). They cause a drop in system pressure, which can make applications run less efficiently, adversely affecting production.

Increased running time due to air leaks can lead to additional maintenance requirements and increased unscheduled downtime. Finally, leaks can lead to increasing compressor capacity unnecessarily.

While leakage can come from any part of the system, the most common problem areas are:

Couplings, hoses, tubes, and fittings (tubes and push-to-lock fittings in particular)
Disconnects: O-rings required to complete the seal may be missing.
Filters, regulators and lubricators (FRLs): Low first-cost, improperly installed FRLs often leak.
Open condensate traps: Improperly operating solenoids and dirty seals are often problem areas.
Pipe joints: Missed welds are a common problem.
Control and shut-off valves: Worn packing through the stem can cause leaks.
Point of use devices: Old or poorly maintained tools can have internal leaks.
Flanges: Missed welds are a common problem.
Cylinder rod packing: Worn packing materials can cause leaks.
Thread sealants: Incorrect and/or improperly applied thread sealants cause leaks.

Once a system has been logged and leaks have been identified and tagged, a detailed report is produced, outlining the extent of the losses and the recommended works.

Data logging and how it can reduce the energy costs of producing compressed air

Reducing energy costs

With energy costs likely to increase exponentially in the short term at the very least, energy efficiency has never been more important to businesses than it is now. Compressed air equipment is a significant consumer of electricity and usually accounts for at least 15% of a plant’s energy use. Air production is therefore one of the most important areas to start when looking to improve your energy efficiency and reduce costs.

Potential’ energy savings are no longer enough however, they are now vital and consequently, they must be measurable. This is where data-logging comes in:

Air compressors are energy-rated by manufacturers but there are many external factors that can affect their efficiency within a specific set-up. Before any improvements can be made therefore, data logging must be used to establish a baseline of how much power a system uses (by the kW) and from this it can be determined whether it is performing according to the manufacturer’s specification and how much money it is costing you to run.

Leaks

By logging the level of air usage over a period of time, it is possible to map peaks and troughs in the air demand pattern, which in turn can help you to identify various issues within the system.

For example. an unexpected level of air use during shutdown times such as evenings and weekends, may signal air leaks and therefore wasted energy and unnecessary costs.

Establishing how much air you are losing allows you to decide whether an air leak detection audit is required which can lead to vast improvements in the operation and efficiency of your facility generating significant financial savings.

Sizing for new plant

it is often difficult to assess whether an existing system is correctly sized for the current load and whether a smaller or larger system is required to maintain adequate capacity and efficient system operation. As a business expands and applications evolve so can the need for compressed air. It may be that equipment has been added to the process and/or that more air is now required than the system was originally designed to produce.

Data logging allows you to assess exactly how much air you are producing versus how much you require. This information is particularly important before purchasing new plant so that you can accurately identify the most efficient size of machine for your particular process. Basing your choice on the existing system’s specification alone will not necessarily give you the most efficient, reliable and cost-effective option. Incorrectly sized equipment can lead to excessive running costs, insufficient pressure and breakdowns so making a properly informed choice at this point is crucial.

At BCAS, we use a simulation wizard to indicate the potential cost savings of different compressor configurations, both fixed and variable, against your existing compressor volume. Where possible, this will also allow you to ensure a new system will accommodate future expansion.

Reliability

Compressed air systems are subject to constantly changing conditions to which they must adapt in order to maintain adequate system pressure. It is difficult to closely monitor pressure fluctuations manually but installing logging equipment allows data to be recorded and analysed.

Moreover, if multiple parameters are logged, such as pressure, flow, and compressor power, it can be possible to identify the response of the compressors to pressure changes or vice versa. Investigations and recommendations can then be made to improve the reliability of pressure. In turn, this leads to the system working more effectively and efficiently and with fewer breakdowns – all of which affect your energy costs.

The process

Data loggers are typically fitted to a compressor for 7-14 days in order to record any trends and demand fluctuation throughout the working week, as well as the weekend. The data loggers we use at BCAS, incorporate high-quality sensors to collect and store information relating to a system’s pressure, current, and flow rate. Our current and voltage loggers enable true power to be accurately measured, with power costs calculated using these figures.

The latest software technology allows us to analyse, chart, graph and prepare professional audit reports. We use these to recommend system changes that will allow you to improve the reliability of your compressed air system and reduce your energy consumption and costs. Data logging is then used again to establish the effectiveness of any changes made and to measure the resulting energy and cost savings.

Breathing Air - the need for quality testing

In confined environments where breathing air is provided by a compressor, it is essential to monitor and maintain air supplies regularly. Air supplies from compressors can develop contaminants over time, such as oil, water and dust particles. These are some of the causes and hazards of contaminated breathing air taking from a compressed air system:

Breathing air filtration has a finite life so after regular use it will fail and cause oil and water to leak into the air supply.
Airborne pollution including exhaust fumes and dust can be ingested via the air intake to a compressor and not all of this will be removed by standard breathing air filtration.
High levels of water in breathing air can freeze within the Respiratory Protective Device demand valves causing the air supply to fail.
It is important to note that when contaminants are breathed in at an elevated pressure, they can have a far greater impact on users than they would at normal pressure.
The performance of compressor and filtration equipment can change quickly and will affect the quality of breathing air provided. Failure to carry out testing regularly enough can leave users exposed to poor air quality for an extended period.

There is clearly a health risk to the user if they are breathing in contaminated air. Failure to manage this risk can lead to both immediate and long-term health issues such as carbon monoxide poisoning, industrial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Meeting BS EN 12021 regulations

BS EN 12021 is a breathing air quality regulation designed to ensure that breathing air being supplied to an operator is safe and adequate for the respiratory protective equipment they are using.

This regulation requires systems to be regularly monitored, maintained and certified by qualified test professionals.

A comprehensive air quality test will measure levels of:

Flow
Oil mist
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Water vapour
Odour and taste

Once the test has been carried out, if the equipment has been shown to adhere to standard BS EN 12021, a Certificate of Testing is produced.

If the air quality fails to meet the current regulations however, the qualified test engineer will recommend appropriate corrective measures. It is advised to test the air again, once these measures have been carried out and before the breathing air point is used again.

Frequency of testing

Low pressure

EN12021 advises that tests should be carried out every three months or more frequently if there have been any changes to the system. HSE guidance states that the frequency of such tests should be based on a risk assessment, but again they should take place at least every three months, and more often when the quality of air cannot be assured to these levels.

High pressure

With high-pressure systems, filter elements have a much shorter life than low-pressure. Therefore, it is recommended that risk assessments for frequency of testing should be based on the expected filter life. Testing should be carried out when new filter elements are fitted and then again when they reach 50% of their life based on the hours run. Subsequent tests would then be dependent on usage with a maximum interval between tests of 3 months.

The final decision on frequency of test is the responsibility of the Employer and needs to not only reflect local legislation but also the task and frequency of use. It should be incorporated into a risk assessment and updated regularly to reflect results from ongoing breathing-air tests to maintain a robust control system.

Record keeping

It is recommended that test certificates and records are kept for 5 years. These can be held in paper or electronic format but should be readily accessible for examination by safety representatives or inspectors.

Collecting for Wallingford Emergency Food Bank

December’s nearly here so once again BCAS will be collecting food and toiletries for Wallingford Food Bank .

Set up in 2011, Wallingford Food Bank is part of a national network of organisations that provide emergency food packages to those in need in their local communities.

Run from Ridgeway Community Church on St Mary’s Street in Wallingford, the food bank covers a wide area from Berinsfield to Watlington, Chalgrove to Woodcote and Goring and Streatley.

Run entirely by volunteers, the charity is reliant on direct donations of food from the public, schools, churches and businesses and is a much-needed safety net for many local families.
